Hybrid Cars: What’s the Difference between MHEV vs PHEV vs Full Hybrid?
Blog

If you’re looking at hybrid cars for sale in the UK, you’ve probably come across terms like MHEV, PHEV, and Full Hybrid (HEV). While all three use electric power in some way, they work very differently – and choosing the right one can make a big difference to your running costs and driving experience.

At Victoria Motor Company Newport, we want to make things simple. Here’s our guide to the three main types of hybrid vehicles and how to decide which is right for you.

What is an MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle)?

An MHEV, or Mild Hybrid, is the entry point into hybrid technology. Instead of driving on electricity alone, it uses a small electric motor to support the petrol or diesel engine, or uses a separate electrical system to run the cars accessories. The car cannot drive solely on electric power.

No need to plug in – the battery charges itself.
Better fuel efficiency than a standard engine.
Lower emissions

An MHEV is a great choice if you want an affordable way to enjoy the benefits of hybrid technology without changing your driving habits. Because the car cannot drive solely on electric power you wont even notice it’s a hybrid !

We stock a range of MHEV including Ford Focus, Ford Puma, Hyundai Bayon, Hyundai i20, Nissan Qashqai, Mazda 3, Seat Leon, Suzuki Vitara, Suzuki S-Cross, Volkswagen Golf

What is a Full Hybrid (HEV)?

A Full Hybrid – often just called a “Hybrid” – can drive short distances on electric power alone. The car automatically switches between the engine and electric motor, depending on speed and power demands.

Electric-only driving around town and while cruising.
No charging required – it recharges while you drive.
Excellent choice for city driving with improved MPG.

Full Hybrids suit drivers who spend most of their time in urban areas but still need flexibility for longer motorway journeys. Switching between Electric and engine power is seamless with no interruptions and no buttons to press.

We stock a range of HEVs including Hyundai Ionic, Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, Renault Arkana, Renault Captur, Renault Clio, Suzuki Swace, Toyota Corolla.

What is a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle)?

A PHEV is the most advanced hybrid option, combining a petrol engine with a larger battery that you can charge at home or at public charging points.

Up to 30 of electric-only range (model dependent).
Very low running costs if you charge regularly.
Ideal for commuting on electric power with the reassurance of a petrol engine for long trips.

PHEVs are perfect if you have access to charging at home or work and want the best of both worlds – electric efficiency for short journeys and petrol power for longer ones. Switching between Electric and engine power is seamless with no interruptions and no buttons to press.

We stock a range of PHEV’s including Citroen C5, Cupra Formentor, Hyundai Santa-Fe, Kia Sportage, MG HS, Toyota C-HR, Volkswagen Tiguan

MHEV vs PHEV vs Hybrid: Which Should You Choose?

• Choose an MHEV if you want better efficiency and lower emissions without plugging in.
• Choose a Full Hybrid (HEV)
if you drive mainly in town and want to save fuel in stop-start traffic.
• Choose a PHEV if you can charge regularly and want maximum savings on fuel and road tax.
